About our work

Our work is informed by hands-on stewardship in the natural communities of southern Michigan. From the designs we conceive to the landscapes we construct and maintain, our experience in the field inspires what we do. Our goal is to create and care for spaces in which our clients can cultivate their own personal connection to the outdoors.

Why native plants?

Native plants are recognized as being in southern Michigan prior to European colonization. Time has rendered them well-adapted to the climate and soil, they need no fertilization and little water once established, and provide food and cover for a host of bird and insect species. The deep roots of native plants form pathways through which water re-enters the soil, slowing stormwater runoff and fixing carbon from the atmosphere.

Work here

Restoration Technician

Appel Environmental Design is a private LLC dedicated to hands-on stewardship in the natural communities of Southern Michigan. Our goal is to create and care for spaces in which our clients can cultivate their own personal connection to the outdoors. We work to restore a variety of local native ecosystems, from tallgrass prairies and oak savannahs to deciduous forests. We also perform these efforts on smaller scales, incorporating native plant communities into human landscape features.

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to serve as Restoration Technician, responsible for assisting with a wide range of ecological restoration and native plant landscaping projects. This position reports directly to the Restoration Manager, with whom the technician will work closely in the field. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a variety of outdoor settings. This is an entry level position, with opportunities for advancement based on skill level and experience.
